Iraq's Agriculture Ministry forecasts 2019 paddy rice production at 600,000 tons, reports Reuters. The production is estimated to cover 70% of the country's rice demand of about one million tons.

The 2019 planted area reached a record 645,000 donhums (around 161,250 hectares). Iraq banned rice cultivation in 2018 due to water shortages. In 2017, Iraq planted 100,000 donhums (around 25,000 hectares).

The increase in area is due to permission granted by some additional provinces.

USDA estimates Iraq to produce about 450,000 tons of paddy (around 300,000 tons, milled basis), an import about 1.15 million tons in 2019-20.
