Japan has purchased 54,000 tons of rice in international tenders for delivery between October 20 – December 10, 2019, according to a notice on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests, and Fisheries (MAFF).

Japan bought 26,000 tons of non-glutinous milled rice from the U.S. and 28,000 tons of non-glutinous milled rice from Thailand.

A total of 28 bidders participated in bidding that took place on September 20, 2019.

The average price of the imported rice is JPY 75,907 per ton (around $703 per ton) excluding tax and JPY 81,980 per ton (around $759 per ton) including tax.

The results pertain to the second ordinary import tender issued by Japan in FY 2019-20 (April 2019 - March 2020).
